Since Manchester City announced Guardiola would be taking over from Manuel Pellegrini this summer the club has fallen from being one of the title favourites to no more than a top-four contender.
City have taken just four points from a possible 18 in the Premier League and, following Sunday’s defeat by local rivals Manchester United, a place in next season’s Champions League is under serious threat.
The Spaniards can only hope Pellegrini fights in increasingly difficult circumstances to secure Champions League football for his successor. Anything less would be an absolute disaster.
Guardiola is facing a far tougher challenge than when he took over at either Barcelona or Bayern Munich and could have difficulty offloading some of the unwanted stars on astronomical wages.
